The thing that’s going to save ‘real books’ is also technology. Publishers are getting closer to ‘on demand’ manufacturing.
I understand desk top PC’s are also being phased out. I need a new ‘puter and am actually considering a PC because today I can buy so much power in a desktop and it’s so much cheaper than a laptop. I’ll still have my old laptop but for home/blogging etc – $1000 on a notebook but same basic stuff on a PC for $400. Amazing.
This is a most depressing development. I am still young, but I actually like the touch and feel of a good old-fashioned book.
I wonder what the trade-off is in the energy consumption required to produce a book vs. the energy consumption required over the lifetime of a Kindle. My guess is that the answer is not as straightforward as it seems…
…or maybe it is….
